Top 20 IELTS Prep Tips
Listening Tips from the British Council
https://toefl-toeic-ielts-cambridge.blogspot.com/2024/05/top-20-ielts-prep-tips.html
1. Set a realistic goal for yourself and do not aim for shortcuts.
2. Create a listening routine and stick to it:
(a) Listen to something different every day. For example, on Monday listen to a podcast, on Tuesday listen to 15 minutes of a news program, on Wednesday listen to a song, Thursday listen to sports summary, Friday listen to Science Reviews
(b) Listen to something which interests you!
(c) Choose different sources as a variety of accents and dialects will help you understand better spoken English from around the world.
(d) Choose listening materials which fit your level. If you can understand <50% and >90% of the audio, then it is not for you as it is either too easy or too difficult. TED talks (https://www.ted.com/talks) are a great way to practice academic listening.
(e) Do it when you are most productive during the day – are you a morning or an evening person?
(f) Plan your listening activities and cross them off once you’ve completed them.
(g) Listen to something a few times; change the speed.
3. Focus on the overall message and do not get frustrated about detail.
4. Take notes while you’re listening and go back to discover what expressions or clues in the audio helped you understand the message.
5. Don’t worry too much about unfamiliar words; if you hear something which is repeated in different sources, look it up in the dictionary and study it.
6. Call a friend and discuss issues in English for a set time period (for example, 10 minutes).
7. Try to guess questions you haven’t answered. This is especially important for “yes”, “no” or “don’t know” questions as the chance of you getting the right answer by chance is pretty high!
8. Before each section you are given time to read the questions. Use this time sensibly and read the questions carefully but not too slowly or the recording will start before you have finished reading.
9. Be sure to answer with the correct number of words. If the question asks for two or three words, don’t use four or five.
10. Write clearly. If the examiner cannot read your writing, then you will get no marks. If you think your writing is bad, use capital letters.
11. During the transferring time first make sure you have transferred all the questions you have answered legibly (easy to read) and in the correct space. Then go back, review and try to answer the ones you haven’t. Make an educated guess, as your aim should be to have an answer sheet with no blank spaces.
Reading tips
1. Choose a variety of texts and combine reading for studying with reading for pleasure.
2. Spend 20-30 minutes every day reading different texts: newspaper articles, blogs, books, textbook activities.
3. Improve your vocabulary by looking up common words (words you hear a lot) in the dictionary.
4. Try different techniques while reading: skim and scan the text quickly, answer questions in detail, summarise the main idea(s).
5. Choose topics of interest but also try to read texts on various topics as IELTS chooses subjects from many fields.
6. Discuss some interesting texts with your friends and exchange ideas in English.
7. Read for speed. Set a timer and try to read a text within the time limit (e.g. 5 mins). Check your understanding. Reduce the time limit as you improve and get faster (e.g. from 5 mins to 4 mins to 3 mins).
8. Read aloud with your friends or even by yourself. You could record yourself if you wish. Listen to how you sound. This will help your fluency and pronunciation. It will also build your self-confidence.
9. Familiarise yourself with the style of the exam and how long each part takes. You need to develop skills to answer each type of question in the reading examination. Questions could take the form of any of the following:
- Multiple choice
- Short answer questions
- Sentence completion questions
- Notes/ table/ form/ summary/ flow chart/diagram completion questions
- Yes, no, not given or True, false, not given
- Classification questions
- Matching
- Choosing headings
- Scanning & identifying location of information
- Labelling a diagram which has numbered parts.
There are many IELTS Practice tests available, which provide examples of the above. Do as many practice tests as you can to get used to the rubric and the task types.

How to SEND additional IELTS Test Report Forms to all the universities that you applied to.
How to send your IELTS score to universities by post
Most universities will ask to see an original copy of your IELTS Test Report Form, as photocopies will not be accepted.
We strongly advise that you retain your original copy and keep it somewhere safe rather than sending it out to a university or anywhere else just in case it goes missing in transit.
IELTS can supply up to five additional copies free of charge and send these direct to the universities you are applying to on your behalf. (These additional Test Report Forms cannot be sent direct to you; only to your chosen universities).
If you would like IELTS to do this, simply include the relevant university addresses on the Test Taker portal within two years of taking the test.
If your test centre has closed, you can ask for your IELTS results to be sent to your additional organisations by filling in the application for additional TRFs (from closed test centres) form This service is available for up to two years from your test date.
If you took your test at a test centre in the USA, you can request that the test centre send copies of your TRF to up to five institutions for free (postal fees may apply if the institution is outside the USA).
If you need additional Test Report Forms sent to your chosen organisation after your test date, you will need to fill in an IELTS USA Test Report Form request (administrative and/or postal fees may apply).
If you have an eTRF, you can print it out yourself and send it to your chosen universities by post.
How to send your IELTS score to universities electronically
While paper versions remain the norm for most universities, some have now subscribed to the electronic download of IELTS scores.
Please check with your chosen university[s] before sending a hard copy of your results or asking IELTS to do so. If the universities you wish to apply to are registered for electronic download, IELTS can send up to ten e-copies free of charge.
Alternatively, if you have taken IELTS Online or IELTS on a computer in some countries (Argentina, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, Occupied Palestinian Territories or Qatar), you can request an e-TRF from the Test Taker portal.
If you have an eTRF, you can also send this directly to the universities you are applying to via email. There’s no limit to how often you can do this, providing your eTRF is less than two years old.
In some instances, a university may accept a scanned copy of your (paper) Test Report Form. In that case, you can scan the form and submit it as a PDF.
How to send your IELTS score to universities as a PDF:
- First scan your form and save it in PDF format
- Then go to the website of the university you’re applying to
- Find the section on admissions requirements
- Follow the instructions for submitting your IELTS results
- Upload your PDF and submit it

The British Council looks into the Future of English
The British Council will be driving data collection globally to inform future research. As part of our long-term commitment, we have initiated a major new Future of English research grant scheme.
This is the first publication in a major programme of research and global engagement started by the British Council in 2020.
The Future of English research programme will show the trends driving the use of English as a global language and provide data to inform policy-makers, educators, researchers, and others interested in this important topic.
Key findings:
English is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is the global language of communication and English is likely to retain this position for the next decade and beyond.
English will continue to play an important role, increasingly doing so alongside other languages to provide rich linguistic opportunities for learners all over the world.
There is a strong connection between the desire to learn English and the need for teachers, even when new technologies are considered.
The private sector can fill the gaps in public sector language education provision and can increase opportunities for young people. However, the quality of some private provision is variable and the report recommends greater collaboration between public and private providers.
Policy makers should continuously review the approach to assessing English proficiency to make sure assessment practices stay relevant for today’s study, work and social interactions.
Technology has the potential to help greater numbers of students access language learning. But the publication found that it also risks widening the divide between people who have access to technology and those who do not.
Change is happening. The report notes that there has been a gradual, industry-led, shift away from the ideal of mother tongue fluency towards a more applied and contextualised approach to language proficiency.

English Language Vocabulary Learning Strategies
English Language Vocabulary Learning Strategies is now "here"
The mathematicians that study language and have lots of computing power are forming English language databases. These databases can be used for machine language translation, formulas to rank collocation, most used priority word lists, word grouping tendencies and other linguistics research.
These frequency-based wordlists contain the words that are most used in English. Frequency-based wordlists can help you target specific English vocabulary by indicating which words you should try to learn first.
Vocabulary analysis and summaries from the "Brown Corpus 1990".
Table 1
Words - Percent of words in average text
86,741 43,831 15,851 6,000 5,000 4,000 3,000 2,000 1,000 10 | 99.99% 99.0% 97.8% 89.9% 88.6% 86.7% 84.0% 79.7% 72.0% 23.7% |
Table 1 shows us that in most written English just a few word types account for most of the English words in any text. Ten words account for 23.7 % of the words on any page and just 1000 word families account for more than 70% of the words used.
The ESL in Canada English Immersion camps experimented with the 1000 word lists and used them for the core vocabulary for spelling, poetry writing and public speaking contests. The constant reinforcement and repetition with variable context was quickly absorbed by the beginner students and greatly increased their confidence when speaking or writing.
When learning English "context is king" becomes most important
Altavista's Babelfish or Google by Systran machine translation performs with an error rate of 20 to 30 percent. The large error rate is due to how a word's meaning varies with context. One example: "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" translated from English to Russian and back again only to yield "The vodka is good but the meat is rotten." So far Babelfish has 19 language pairs available and it has taken decades to develop language-pair rules for each of the 9,900 language word pairs.
Some observations for language students and language teachers is that the translation pool for just average translations is 9900 words. The big variable is context, which means that a word can be used in various formats: "formal, industry specific jargon, slang, idioms, act a different part of speech performing a different function within that particular meaning. If every word has an average of five context variables then the student really has to learn 50,000 items.
As final conclusions: second language learning takes time and effort and there should be plenty of translation jobs for the next 20 years if you are willing to invest the 5,000 to 10,000 hours to be proficient.
In the following example the word "weather" can be used in about eight different contexts and be used to mean, define or explain about thirty different situations or conditions. To properly study vocabulary students require background information and context.
"Weather"
As a Noun
Definition 1. the state of the atmosphere at a particular place and time as characterized by sunshine, moisture, temperature, precipitation, and other variables.
Similar Words: elements, climate
Definition 2. unpleasant, turbulent, or violent atmospheric conditions.
Example: We needed shelter from the weather.
Similar Words: gale, elements, blow, windstorm , storm
As a Transitive Verb
Inflected Forms: weathered, weathering, weathers
Definition 1. to dry, season, or modify by exposure to weather.
Similar Words: season , dry
Definition 2. to discolor, deteriorate, or harm by exposure to weather.
Similar Words wash , rot , erode, deteriorate
Definition 3. to endure past the end of; survive.
For example: Their marriage weathered the hard times.
Synonyms: withstand , survive, stand, outlast , endure , ride out
Similar Words: overcome, surmount, outlive, sustain, brave
As an Intransitive Verb
Definition 1. to resist deterioration when exposed to weather.
Example: The colour has been able to weather the intense sunshine.
Definition 2. to display the effects of exposure (deterioration or change in color)
Similar Words: rot, corrode, fade, deteriorate
As part of Idiomatic Expressions
Phrase used as an idiom: "under the weather" = sick or not well

IELTS for Migration
IELTS is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency for study, work and migration in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.
If you are applying for a work visa, professional recognition or for permanent residency in Canada you will be required to present evidence of English language proficiency.
To gain a Canadian visa, you will need to demonstrate your English abilities to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
IELTS assesses your English proficiency on a scale from 1–9 in four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You have a choice of two test types – IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training.
Accessible and convenient IELTS is offered up to four times a month. Tests are held on Saturdays and Thursdays. To find out test dates in your area, please contact your nearest IELTS test centre.
The international test IELTS is internationally focused in its content. For example, texts and tasks are sourced from publications from all over the English-speaking world; a range of native-speaker accents (North American, Australian, New Zealand, British etc.) are used in the Listening test; and all standard varieties of English are accepted in test takers’ written and spoken responses.
The test that’s tried and trusted IELTS has been developed by some of the world’s leading experts in language assessment, and is supported by an extensive program of research, validation and test development.
The level of the test IELTS is designed to assess English language skills across a wide range of levels. There is no such thing as a pass or fail in IELTS. Results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest).
